China has maintained a wall of silence about its domestic military aerospace programmes since its industrial development began. This, combined with Beijing's wideranging and punitive definition of 'state secrets', has made the Cold War practice of analysing airshow models, or 'modelology', a useful tool in predicting future Chinese combat aircraft trends.
